Golf Holidays in France

Monday, December 14th, 2009

There are many different types of sports holidays out there that you are able to go on in practically any country in the world, one of the big sports that have good holidays is golf. So many people the world over enjoy this great game and it is only natural that people are going to want to travel the world to find the best course to play. One of the best I have found is to go on golf holidays in France.

The best thing about golf holidays in France is that it is situated in a country which has so many heavenly locations based around the whole country. You are always going to be able to find a brilliant course in a fantastic location each time. Another great thing about golf holidays in France is that if you go to certain resorts they offer so many different things so that even if your family or whoever you are taking along with you (if you not going on your own) does not like golf then there are going to be many different other activities for them to get on with so that you can enjoy your game of golf with no nagging.

Another fantastic part of golf holidays in France is that you do not even need to know how to play this fantastic game because you can have lessons out there and see if you are going to be the next Tiger Woods. Many different resorts have different kinds of facilities and training programmes to help you learn golf including putting greens, driving range and even courses for people at all kinds of abilities.

Golf holidays in France will usually have driving ranges where you can go and hit balls as far and as well as you can. You will go into one of the many bays which are situated next to each other and then you can choose your clubs and hit as many balls as you want. This is good practise for you to work on your swing and your shots. It also saves you walking after your balls if that is the part of gold that you do not like (if there is any part you do not like).

If you would just like to get up to scratch on your putting skills then golf holidays in France will more than likely have a putting green where you can put the ball at the hole from anywhere on the green that you like. This is great to improve your game.

Also many different resorts have small holes where you are able to play a short course and practise chip shots along with putting as well. So if you want to improve any part of your golfing game or just learn how to play the game, golf holidays in France is probably one of the best ideas you will have. Most resorts are very friendly and also to boot they aren’t even that expensive. You can find cheap golf holidays looking online or through catalogues which some resorts offer and you can find them in most travel agents.

Specialist Holidays in Tenerife

Friday, December 4th, 2009

In addition to being a perfect winter holiday getaway destination, Tenerife is also a favourite location for many specialist holiday providers. This group of holiday packagers focus on niche market sectors and provide specialist holidays to cater for certain types of people or people with special interests. These holidays are often based around characteristics of the people themselves, perhaps their age or religious beliefs for example, but more normally they are created to cater for particular hobbies or the special areas of interest of those people.

Cookery holidays, walking holidays, photography holidays, birdwatching holidays and painting holidays are all examples of specialist holidays that now use Tenerife as their base. Holidays of this type are usually provided for smaller groups of people and feature either a guide or tutor as part of the package.

Birdwatching holidays are a popular type of specialist with English visitors to Tenerife. The island, likes others in the Canaries, provides opportunities to spot seabirds and native species that are not found in the UK. Endemic varieties include the Blue Chaffinch which is a common sight and the more elusive Bolle’s Pigeon and Laurel Pigeon. Another obvious native is the Tenerife Goldcrest which is non-migratory and so is only found on Tenerife and the nearby island of La Gomera.

Tenerife is famous for its warm winter climate and watersports enthusiasts can take advantage of this weather to extend their season. Ample accessible coastline and spectacular Atlantic surf make it a favourite destination for surfers, windsurfers and kite surfers.

Scuba diving is also a popular activity on Tenerife. There are several scuba training schools which take advantage of the underwater volcanic rock formations and the abundance of sealife. For around 500 euros, which covers tuition and accommodation, novices can undergo an intensive week long course leading to the PADI Open Water Scuba certificate. Comfortable average sea and air temperatures, which make diving a year-round sport in Tenerife, has led to several specialist Dive Schools setting up base on the island.

Warm weather training camps are the preserve of any serious athlete who finds their off season months spoilt by cold wet weather. Sportsmen from the UK and other northern european countries have long appreciated the warmer winter climate of the Canaries. Lanzarote is the first location that springs to mind when you think of athletes, triathletes and cyclists looking for early season training facilities, but Tenerife also has plenty to offer. Los Cristianos in the south of the island boasts an Olympic sized swimming pool for swim camps and a modern synthetic athletics track for both track and field athletes.

Tenerife also provides a fine winter base for cyclists, both amateur and professional alike. The resort was made famous recently by the visit of Lance Armstrong and his Astana team, who used the island as part of their preparations for the season ahead. Mountainous roads, pine forests and warm weather make Tenerife a perfect choice for cyclists looking to train in the months of December and January. The mountainous regions, high altitude routes and forests also make the island great for off-road cycling and several companies provide MTB ( Mountain Bike ) tours and holidays.

For the true adventurer one company is now providing the ultimate sporting challenge on Tenerife. The four day challenge involves travelling from sea level using a combination of canoeing, walking, mountain biking, rope descents, overnight camps in the company of experienced guides, culminating near the 3800m peak of Teide Volcano. Participants are limited in numbers and are expected to be both fit and flexible.

So you see Tenerife has a wealth of options and opportunities for the specialist holiday maker. Travel to the island is made easier by a wealth of low cost flight providers who fly to the island’s two airports on a year-round basis. Tenerife Airport South, or Reina Sofia, is the larger of the two airports and is the one most frequently used by flight providers. The other smaller airport is called Los Rodeos, is located in the north of the island and is used more as an inter-island hub.

Save Your Waistline Over the Holidays With Diet Recipes

Friday, December 4th, 2009

<!– @page { size: 8.5in 11in; margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } –>

The holidays are upon us. Thanksgiving and Christmas are the two major holidays each year and there is so much food consumed during these two days. People travel long distances to be with their families during the holidays. A big part of the holidays revolves around food. Many people look forward to the food as much as they look forward to spending time with family. Thanksgiving means turkey, stuffing, potatoes and many other side dishes along with a host of desserts. Unfortunately holiday food also means holiday calories and pounds. People gain more weight during the holidays than any other time of year. It’s no wonder that people choose the start of the New Year as their time to improve their weight, which is after the holidays.

One way to get a handle on all the food that is being passed around during this time of year is to modify some of your favorite recipes. By simply finding a good diet recipe that is your staple at office and church potlucks during the holidays, you can help your calorie count out tremendously. Using a diet recipe doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice all the flavor and pizzazz you’re used to. With all the different functions you likely attend during the holidays, why not integrate your calorie watching into that? There are a lot of diet recipes out there that you would never know are good for you. Many of the holiday classics can be modified to be what’s considered a diet recipe. Just think of that secret carrot cake recipe you’re famous for, grandma’s world famous mac ‘n cheese recipe or even your favorite cookies. There are tons of alternative ingredients you can use to lower the fat and calorie content of all those dishes. And the best part is, often times when you switch out the ingredients, the flavor doesn’t have to be sacrificed. Using diet recipes isn’t the only way to cut back during the holidays.

You can simply watch your portion sizes as well. Indulging isn’t completely wrong all the time. But remember to not overeat. You can simply have a little of everything. Follow the cues your body gives you and don’t eat until you make yourself sick. If you’re the one doing the hosting and cooking at your house, try a few diet recipes. You can easily incorporate these into the traditional Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and your guests will be none the wiser. Of course they’ll be thankful that you saved them some calories. And you might find that your guests are anxious to get the diet recipes from you. Just because it’s the holidays doesn’t mean that all is lost where calories and fat are concerned. You can take charge of your holiday eating by using Diet recipes along with some of your other favorite dishes.

Exciting Holidays

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Activity holidays a great way to spice up your vacation, so if you are stuck for ideas then why not try one of these:

SCUBA-DIVING

Scuba-diving is one of the fastest-growing water sports in the world. The Maldives are acknowledged as one the world’s greatest dive destinations, as are many of the Red Sea resorts such as Sharm el Sheikh, Hurghada and Taba. Diving in the Red Sea is popular due to its amazing underwater scenery with coral gardens, deep blue canyons and famous wrecks.

SKIING

Bulgaria is a perfect destination to try out skiing and snowboarding for the first time as it is really good value and tuition is cheap. For more experienced skiers, Charmonix in France or St Anton in Austria may prove more testing, while further afield, Jackson Hole in USA and Colorado’s Aspen boast some of the most challenging ski terrain in the world.

HIKING

As well as a tough pair of boots you’ll often need an equally tough mentality. The Canary Islands are ideal for discovering on foot. Whether you decide to venture to the summit of Mount Teide on Tenerife or simply stroll through the lush tropical greenery on La Palma you are sure to enjoy a fascinating experience.

SAFARI

Kenya is undeniably the best known destination for safari holidays. Hosting some of the most spectacular and varying wildlife in the world, Kenya features mountainous rainforests and large game reserves which take in lion, cheetah, elephant, and an abundance of bird life.

HORSE RIDING

Horse riding holidays in many destinations can combine both daily riding with time to relax on the beach. In Greece, the unspoilt Pelion Peninsula on the east coast is an excellent riding resort. Italy is famous for good horses, beautiful landscapes, delicious food and plentiful wine, so Tuscany is an ideal location for a horse riding holiday with several challenging long-distance rides from village to village.

WHITE WATER RAFTING

A fun family activity, rafting can take in spectacular scenery and the natural beauty of surrounding areas, as well as providing a natural roller-coaster ride through ferocious mountain rivers. White-water rafting in Dalaman, Turkey is one of the most exciting holiday experiences and is perfect for active thrill seekers. The Dalaman River is rated as one of the top rafting destinations in the world, but don’t worry – professionals will guide you every step of the way for an unforgettable adventure.

SAILING

Whether you sail on your own or opt for luxury crewed sailing, whereby a crew takes care of everything for you, there is no other activity to match it. With its tropical islands, the Caribbean is a particular favourite sailing holiday destination. In the Mediterranean, the Greek islands dominate the sailing scene with the Ionian Islands. Turkey’s Lycian Coast is also very popular.

GOLF

Golf holidays are an increasingly popular way of exploring the world while playing some of the most exciting golf courses on the planet. The all-year-round sunny mild climate of the Canary Islands and Florida make golf holidays an ideal break. Spain offers famous courses like Valderama and plenty of cheap golf holidays in Catalonia and the Costa Brava. Golf holidays are particularly popular on the Costa del Sol (nicknamed the Costa del Golf!), which has the biggest concentration of courses in Europe and of course offers plenty of options for the 19th hole!

CYCLING

Leaving your troubles behind on a cycling holidays is a refreshing and liberating experience. The concept of being free to go where you want is very luring to many cyclists. Of course, you can follow established routes which are littered throughout Spain, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and – a relative newcomer – Croatia, which boasts ancient roads criss-crossing through the stunning countryside.

WINDSURFING

With consistently reliable winds, the Canary Islands are a favourite windsurf destination, particularly on Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. In southern Spain Tarifa, is for the more experienced windsurfers, while Hurghada on the Red Sea coast boasts equally powerful year-round conditions. Further afield, Aruba and Barbados provides perfect conditions for windsurfing.

Package Holidays: Less of Them and at a Higher Price Too

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Going on holiday is a tradition in the average UK citizen’s year where we get to jet away from working in the office for a week or two in the sun. Millions of Britons travel to Spain, Greece and other more far-flung destinations to get away from the hassles of working life and to enjoy themselves.

This tradition used to be a luxury back thirty years ago but as we moved on to the nineties and early 2000’s many new cheap flight companies and tour operators spread like wild fire, high streets and web pages touted flights to European destinations for ridiculously low prices and whilst many of these sensationalist deals were subject to taxes and other additional costs the price of flying was clearly lower than it ever was and more and more of us jetted away.

The past year though has seemingly popped this cheap holidays bubble and sent many of us crashing down to earth with prices rising due to airline running costs (specifically fuel costs) and the financial situation in general making holidays seem more and more expensive by the week.

Many UK holiday makers are now finding that extra charges and the shrinking market of cheap flights companies is making us rethink that extra holiday next year, and in some cases any kind of trip abroad all together. Two of Britain’s biggest tour operators have stated that they are looking to cut down on package holidays over the next two years too.

The two holiday giants have said that due to the amount of holidays being booked dropping that they are having to cut back and push up prices on package holidays. This seems to be the norm for the travel industry in general at the moment. Where in the past many companies had offered lots of cheap holidays they are now concentrating on profit margins and this means less holidays and at a higher price to boot.

It is easier for larger holiday firms to do this due to many of them buying out smaller competitors or the competitors simply folding under the financial pressure. Whilst this price hike is a bit of a problem for holidaymakers many are beginning to take the old fashioned mentality where a holiday is a luxury and not something you can do two or three times a year realistically.

With many people going for cheaper all inclusive holidays and locations closer to home it hasn’t become completely impossible to nab a decent deal on a holiday but as with almost everything over the next year or two we are going to find holidays costing more and the extra money we had set aside being spent on other necessities before splashing out any time soon.

Celebrating the Holidays in a Multicultural Workplace Without Going Broke, Crazy or Out of Business

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Charles Dickens made his opinions clear on employers who fail to adequately celebrate holidays in his masterpiece A Christmas Carol.  His Ebeneezer Scrooge character has been thoroughly denounced and even booed in movies and theatre performances for failing to give Bob Cratchitt the day of Christmas Eve.   Scrooge was punished for his lack of holiday spirit by being visited by nightmares of three ghosts. As a result of his fright, he resolved to change his ways and showed up the following morning at the Cratchitt¹s home with a huge turkey for the feast, joined their family celebration, and became a beloved character from that point on.

We all want to encourage our teams to be happy and festive, and we like to be generous. But I wonder what even the reformed Ebeneezer Scrooge would do when given a tight schedule, a tighter budget; and teams that celebrate Eid, Holi, the Lunar New Year and hundreds of other holidays!

The Solution

Most businesses can¹t afford the time or money to host a major party every couple of weeks. Some corporate environments become sterile and lifeless in
an effort to not favor any culture or holiday over another. I don¹t think that¹s the answer. I think holidays are a great opportunity to get to know each other and appreciate one another better.  Celebrating diverse holidays doesn¹t need to be disruptive, and can bring some color and life into our stressful and sometimes routine workplaces.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Make time off policies as flexible as possible
  • Have a gift policy that prevents discomfort, obligation or the appearance of impropriety
  • Award additional  time off as a performance incentive
  • Post a schedule of major holidays and keep it in mind when scheduling work projects.
  • Make the office festive without being obtrusive
  • Encourage employees to organize lunchtime potlucks or break room treats.

Make time off policies as flexible as possible, but encourage people to schedule their time off as far in advance as possible.   This allows them to balance their priorities and not miss out on any important family events. Some companies encourage employees to schedule half or most of their vacation at least a month in advance, keeping some in reserve for unplanned events, emergencies and illness.

Having a gift-giving policy that is in effect for all holidays prevents employees from feeling obligated or embarrassed at being caught empty-handed.  Many companies advocate a cap of $5 on any personal gifts between employees for birthdays, or holidays, or allow no personal gifts at all.   Bringing a community gift like a basket of food to a team for completing a project is often much more appropriate.

Awarding additional time off as a performance incentive often costs less than financial bonuses. You can put conditions on this additional time off (it needs to be taken within a certain timeframe, may not be taken during particularly busy periods, the employee must negotiate with his team for coverage of vital functions, etc.) and it can still be very motivating without being unduly disruptive of your business.

Post a schedule of major holidays and use it for reference when planning major projects. Recognizing conflicts early gives you more options to negotiate with your teams to get the best possible outcome for everyone. One of the positive factors in multicultural teams is that not everyone will want the same holidays off.  Coverage of vital functions becomes easier when you recognize and schedule time off early.

Make the office festive without being obtrusive.   Allowing employees to decorate certain parts of the office seasonally can make a nice change, can educate employees about each other¹s cultures. Have a wall or an area that can be decorated by employees based on the season or holiday.  Post a schedule and some guidelines (nothing overtly religious, for example, or that could be considered offensive to other employees.)

Encourage employees to organize lunchtime potlucks or break room treats.  I really enjoyed a Diwali potluck at a Wells Fargo Web Services office in San Francisco.  Many employees of Indian descent brought their specialties and decorated the break room.  Everyone appreciated the effort that our ³hosts² had gone to, and other groups reciprocated with a Lunar New Year potluck, and other holiday celebrations. This did not take much more time than people normally take for lunch.  The company supplied paper plates and utensils, (as usual) and employees provided everything else, including cleanup. Everyone pitched in and it was a great experience.

Baskets of fruit, cheese, crackers and candy in the break room are inexpensive and make the office seem festive for employees that have to work during holidays.

A Word of Warning

Don’t make any assumptions about which employees celebrate which holidays based on ethnic background, country of origin, or anything else other than personal preference. We’re all very complex people with very complex families. Your employees of Chinese descent may take “Indian” holidays, your employees of American descent may take Arabic holidays, and so on. Leave all the options open to everyone.

Conclusion

You don¹t have to go ³all or nothing² over holidays in the office. You don¹t have to have huge expensive parties; and you don¹t have to outlaw holidays altogether for fear of being partial.  Placing some commonsense guidelines in place will allow you and your teams to enjoy the holidays without undue friction, stress or expense.

Walkabout Walking Holidays: New Venture for Adventure

Friday, December 4th, 2009

The walkabout nomadic lifestyles of our primitive ancestors developed the genes which predispose us to benefit from active recreation as a powerful antidote to the pressures and hazards of modern living.

This is the premise on which Walkabout Holidays was created; to offer companionship, fitness and satisfaction through walking, adventure and challenge.  The company offers:

* A variety of walking holidays

Walking holidays can be taken in Wales, England, France or Spain all in areas of unique character with superb walking country, easily accessible by road, rail and air. The chosen months are when the weather conditions are best for walking in the hills, and also avoid the busiest tourist seasons.

Wales
* In Wales we are based in the village of Llanberis, a place which has rich historical links with mountaineering and with Wales.
* The walking holidays in Wales are available throughout Spring and Autumn, when the weather is more likely to be dry and sunny, and the Welsh hills are at their best.
* Click here for more details about the weekend walking holidays in Wales.

England
* The weekend walking holidays in England are based in the outstanding natural beauty and diversity of The Lake District.
* “I wandered lonely as a cloud” … walk the paths that Wordsworth walked.
* Click here for more details about the weekend walking holidays in England.

France
* For the walking holidays in France we base ourselves in the Chamonix during the early part of July and again in late August and September.
* Get the best of both worlds by avoiding the crowded Summer season, yet still taking advantage of the lack of deep snow permitting the re-opening of mountain huts and paths.
* Click here for more details about the weekend walking holidays in France.

Spain
* We offer a choice of bases for the Spanish walking holidays but all are located within a short drive of the hills, mountains and coastal paths where the walking takes place.
* We stay in hotels offering ensuite, half board accommodation with either single, double or twin rooms.
* Most of the hotels we stay in have swimming pools and a host of other amenities.

How To Job Search During The Holidays

Friday, December 4th, 2009

With the holidays now in full swing, there’s a tendency to want to relax and put your job search activities on the back burner. Many job seekers think that employers have stopped any hiring they might be considering and will ramp up in the New Year. If you buy into that, you’re missing 6-8 valuable weeks of search time. I recently helped a job seeker with interviewing preparation. She beat out 20 other applicants and got her permanent position right before Thanksgiving. She even got paid for the holiday time off even though she’d only been there for a week. The reality is employers seek candidates year round and even extend offers during this time. Karen Lewis, Careers in the Key of Life, agrees. She says, “don’t approach the job search with the attitude that it’s the holiday season and therefore, opportunities will be limited.  Life, and work, goes on 365 days a year.  Assume that people leave their jobs every day, openings are created everyday, so forge ahead.  Planned Happenstance occurs sometimes when you least expect it!

In collaboration with some other job search professionals, I came up with a few tips for job seeking during the holidays. We all agreed that connecting with people is the most important thing you can do in the job search and especially during the holidays. Your job search activities should include those that connect you to hiring managers and those who can give you good leads. You also need to be prepared to make your pitch and present your qualifications should the opportunity arise. The tips below will help you in important ways as you continue or begin a job search during the holidays.

Holiday Job Search Tip #1: Connect With As Many People As Possible
The holiday season is the perfect time to connect with people and make new contacts. Built into the holidays are numerous occasions for reaching out. You can send greeting cards and holiday updates, attend parties and events, and volunteer with churches or community organizations.

Sally Gelardin, job search expert, suggests sending out entertaining, not boring, holiday e-cards to all of your contacts. They’re conversation starters. People appreciate the diversion of well-written personable cards and are more likely to respond to an electronic card. To make a more memorable impression, Sally further suggests writing something humorous on the card such as, “I don’t usually have the time to send out personalized holiday cards, but since I am in the midst of a job hunt, I have the good fortune this year to have a bit more time on my hands….” or “Since I have time and like to keep up my skills, I’m volunteering with Santa this year, handing out free resume reviews…” You can fill in the blanks as appropriate.

It’s also important to attend as many parties and holiday events as possible. These are great opportunities to network and learn of new opportunities. To make the most of the networking opportunities, career coach, Linda Artel, suggests having your 30-second introduction ready and use it whenever it seems appropriate. She advises that you get names and cards when you can. If requested, send your resume before the holidays and follow up shortly after New Year’s. This is a great way to get into the hiring manager’s pipeline.  Career Advisor, Megan Pittsley encourages job seekers attend Chambers of Commerce mixers, professional association meetings, alumni gatherings, and singles groups, to name a few.  Those are great opportunities to network where people are out and about and make connections while others tend to take the holidays off!

Shahrzad Arasteh, Certified Professional Resume Writer, offers an additional perspective. She says, “Attend those holiday parties and gatherings!  Engaging in meaningful social interactions is good for your physical and psychological health.  Not only does attending holiday gatherings provide the opportunity for you to build and strengthen relationships and your network, but you might learn of potential job opportunities and receive advice/information that will be helpful to you in your job search.  Allowing the conversation to flow naturally, you might casually and very briefly let others know what you are looking for, or what skills you wish to use in your next opportunity.  Keep in mind that the gathering is a social one, not a business networking event, but do appropriately share a brief comment or two about your current career goals.  You never know if one of your conversation partners will end up being the one to give you advice (or even a job offer) leading to your next success!”

Holiday Job Search Tip #2: Stick To Your Job Search Plan
If you’ve been in job search mode for a couple months, by now you might be feeling a little discouraged because you haven’t seen your desired result- a job. It’s at this time that you really want to power through and continue your job search. Since, many other job seekers will be taking a break during the holidays, you’ll stay ahead of the competition. It’s important to stick to your plan so you can keep your momentum. If you think your job search plan and approaches could use some help, go get that help. I work with job seekers all the time and after talking with them for a few minutes I can pinpoint right where they need to focus more attention. You can do that on your own, too. A book I recommend is Get Hired Now! It’s a quick read and will definitely get your job search on track. I also hosted a teleclass in November called, 3 Secrets to Creating Luck in Your Job Search in which I outline three important factors for success in your job search. If you’d like a copy of the recording, send me a request by email, and I will send you the download link.

Holiday Job Search Tip #3: Polish Your Presentation
As you continue your job search during the holidays, you’ll be meeting new people and adding them to your network. The people you’ve already met might also be taking the time to check into your qualifications. You need to make sure you’re presenting yourself well in all mediums. Update and polish your resume to make sure it accurately and effectively reflects your relevant qualifications and accomplishments. You’ve probably heard that hiring managers use online sources more and more to get an impression of candidates. If you have profiles on linkedin, facebook or any other social media tool, make sure your profile is updated and professional looking. If you’re not confident about your interviewing, practice and hone your presentation skills. Enlist the help of a friend or family member.  The toughest interview I ever had was a mock interview my sister gave me years ago. Since then, I’ve gotten every job I’ve interviewed for. Be vigilant about making the most positive impression you can.

Holiday Job Search Tip #4: Volunteer And Help Others
The holiday season is a time of year when many of us are asked to donate our time to help others.  However, not only is volunteering good for society, according to job search expert, Judi Garcia, volunteering is a good way to increase your self-esteem and confidence while in the job search. She advises job seekers consider volunteering in their local communities because helping others is time well spent, while also networking with community and other professionals.  Also, you never know when a job idea or opportunity can show up.  Volunteering in the community can lead to a mentoring or leadership role as a board member, and looks good on a resume.
